Every fifth resident is a visitor. And the Republican Party could not ignore this situation.

State legislators plan to pass a law against “cities of refuge”. According to him, local law enforcement agencies must maintain contact with the Federal Migration Service. Those who ignore the innovation will be held accountable.

According to the new initiative, the local government will maximally promote compliance with the federal immigration law. And that means – to detain suspected migrants without documents before the arrival of ICE employees. Everyone who refused to comply with the new law will be fined up to $ 5,000.

Senator Joe Grüters said that if an immigrant is a hardworking person and does not violate the law, then he has no reason to fear.

Every decision on the issue of migrants affects the economy of Florida. A fifth of the state’s population is migrants. The closer to Miami, the higher the percentage of visiting residents – 53% for Miami and Orlando. The owners of 120 state-owned enterprises, concerned about the economic situation in the state, wrote an open letter to the governor and legislators.

After the promulgation of the bill, senators tried to contact the immigrant protection associations. The American Civil Liberties Union said earlier that over the past 2 years, 420 US citizens in Miami-Dade have received erroneous detention orders.

As he notes, 44-year-old Patricia Okoumou was accused of illegally entering the closed territory, disobeying the order’s guards, as well as obstructing the work of government agencies. The activist declared her innocence. For each of the charges, she may face up to six months in prison. According to the New York Daily News, Patricia Okoumou was charged in 2017 that she had struck a policeman during a protest and resisted detention.

On Wednesday, Patricia Okoumou participated in a demonstration against the immigration policy of the US presidential administration, Donald Trump. Several demonstrators deployed on the island of Liberty, on which the statue, a cloth with an appeal to abolish the Immigration and Customs Service of the country. In connection with the incident, people from the island (mostly tourists) for safety reasons were evacuated.

The police detained seven protesters, but Patricia Okoumou climbed to the foot of the statue. Police officers for more than two hours unsuccessfully tried to persuade her to come down. According to CNN, the woman stated that she would go down only if “all children were released.” It’s about the children of illegal immigrants separated from their parents. According to the practice for several months in the US, the children of illegal immigrants arrested while crossing the border between the United States and Mexico were separated from their families.

As a result, two police officers climbed up and escorted the activist down. Patricia Okoumou was immediately taken into custody.

In recent weeks, a number of political opponents Trump advocated a ban by the US Immigration and Customs Service. It is part of the US Department of Homeland Security, including patrolling borders, detaining and deporting illegal immigrants. The service was accused, in particular, of excessively cruel treatment of illegal immigrants.

The incident occurred in the town of Tukwila near Seattle. According to the lawyer of the detainee – Luis Cortes, his client called the police early in the morning, after seeing a man trying to open his car. The police interrogated the suspect, but for lack of evidence, they were released. But the applicant, a 32-year-old immigrant from Honduras, was arrested.

As an attorney told the Seattle Times, Wilson Makarreno fled the violence in Honduras in 2004. In the US he works as a carpenter, diligently visits the church, he has 3 children who were born in America. According to Luis Cortes, the arrest was illegal: the police do not have the authority to detain people on behalf of immigration agents.

The police department of Tukwila told Facebook that a “bureaucratic mistake” occurred. When the applicant was checked against the bases, an arrest warrant was found from the Immigration and Customs Police (ICE), but it turned out that ICE was not going to arrest the man, but to invite him to a conversation.

Be that as it may, Macarreno is still under arrest and awaits a decision on deportation. The man said that he would either seek asylum in the US, or challenge his arrest.

Lawyer Rich Stolz from the lawyer group OneAmerican noted that this incident will have negative consequences. “There is no doubt that migrants – victims of crimes – now think twice before they report to the police, while law enforcers must protect everyone, regardless of their immigration status,” Stolz said.
